History
Chelsea FC was founded on 10 March 1905 at The Rising Sun pub (now The Butcher’s Hook) in Fulham. The club quickly became one of the most prominent in English football and won its first major title, the league, in 1955. Since then, Chelsea has won several domestic and international titles, including the UEFA Champions League, the most prestigious club competition in European football.
Stamford Bridge
Stamford Bridge, located in Fulham, has been Chelsea’s home ground since the club’s inception. The stadium has undergone several renovations over the years to meet modern standards and to increase capacity. Today, over 40,000 spectators can watch the matches at Stamford Bridge.
Legendary Coaches and Players
Chelsea has had several prominent coaches and players over the years. Among the most prominent coaches are Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti, both of whom have led the club to several major titles. Among the most prominent players are Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and John Terry, all of whom have had a significant impact on the club’s successes.
- Jose Mourinho: Mourinho led Chelsea to two Premier League titles during his first stint as coach of the club (2004-2007). He returned to the club in 2013 and won another league title.
- Carlo Ancelotti: Ancelotti led Chelsea to a “double” in his first season as coach, with the club winning both the Premier League and the FA Cup in 2009/2010.
- Frank Lampard: Lampard is Chelsea’s all-time leading goal scorer, with 211 goals in 648 appearances for the club.
- Didier Drogba: Drogba is one of Chelsea’s most prominent forwards, with 164 goals in 381 appearances for the club.
- John Terry: Terry, who spent his entire professional career at Chelsea, is one of the club’s most prominent defenders and former team captain.
UEFA Champions League
Chelsea has had several prominent appearances in the UEFA Champions League. The club won its first title in the tournament in 2012, after defeating Bayern Munich in the final. Chelsea won its second Champions League title in 2021, after defeating Manchester City in the final.
Nicknames and Rivalries
Chelsea is widely known as “The Blues”, a nickname that comes from the club’s traditional blue home shirts. The club has several rivalries, the most prominent being against Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, two other London-based clubs. These matches, known as “London derbies”, are some of the most intense and passionate in English football.
